It's hard going to my childhood home and walking into an empty house. There are real estate brochures and real estate agents' business cards on the kitchen counter. The furniture is gone and the walls are empty.
The evidence of furniture remains in the forms of indentations that I was unsuccessful at removing when I shampooed the carpet.
Down in the basement, the shelves that were once overflowing with home canned produce sit nearly empty, most of the jars having gone to auction. On the day I took this picture with my iPod, I went to see if the half-gallon jars of tomato juice remained on the shelves. I had previously taken home two jars to see if the contents were still good. Not only were they still good, but as Brady put it, "This is the best tomato juice I've ever had!" (I had to agree.) I took the remaining jars of juice, and in the process hit the mother load! Far in the back behind jars of green beans and grapejuice I jound four jars of pickled redbeets! This was one of my mother's specialties, along with her famous dill pickles. After eating pickled redbeets at a picnic once, Dale claimed he would never eat another pickled redbeet unless my mother made it! Once you've had the very best, it's hard going back!
How wonderful, getting one last treat from my parents... home canned produce grown by my father and canned by my mother! Delicious!
